It has always irked me when people commend a sci-fi movie for being good because it is "escaping the trappings of science fiction" or some such, as if science fiction was just some fluffy genre to look at shiny exploding things in space. It originated as a way to comment on society in a setting that is more accessible and safe, and is more easily swallowed by the general public. Sci-fi offers a freedom of expression that most other genres of film do not have.

It's also a genre currenly taken over by Emmerichs and Bays of this world, the blockbusters that kind of defined the genre for the public. Think: sci-fi, hear: visual effects.

One of my favorite sci-fi films is a Polish low budget flick about a bunch of village people wondering what to do with the UFO that landed on their premises at night. No special effects, but a great film. It's called BIG BANG and I'm sure there is no way you can watch it in UK, I'm afraid :(

I'm really looking forward for a scii-fi film by Ari Folman, "A Futurogical Congress" by Ari Folman, an adaptation of Polish sci-fi writer (Stanislaw Lem, author of "Solaris") book of the same title. This is probably my favorite book of all time.
